The communities and local government select committee has launched an inquiry into pay and rewards for senior council officers, which will examine how remuneration packages are decided.
MPs will look at the salaries, pensions and exit agreements for senior posts, including finance officers, to consider the efficiency and effectiveness of remuneration policies. The committee will also consider the extent to which pay varies between different types of authority, as well as by region and gender
Launching a call for evidence yesterday, the committee said it would also compare top pay deals with both similar jobs in the public and private sectors, and average local government pay.
The experience of town halls that have introduced shared chief executives and management structures, or scrapped the post of chief executive entirely, will also be looked at.
