Robotic pets that double as fire, gas and flood alarms could form part of the next generation of measures used by councils to care for elderly people in their own homes.
The Local Government Association is also backing coffee tables that dispense medicine and fridges that monitor supplies and produce shopping lists.
David Rogers, chair of the LGA’s community wellbeing board, said investing in technology ‘could make huge savings on care home bills and allow people to live independently for longer’.
