Concern over the growing number of students in university towns is leading government, town halls and student bodies to try to limit the impact on resident communities.

Earlier this month, housing minister Caroline Flint launched a review into houses of multiple occupation. And the Local Government Association this week said councils were working on problems associated with student housing, such as noise complaints, neglect of houses and gardens, higher rates of crime (students are often the victims) and local jobs becoming seasonal.

Lancashire councillor Hazel Harding, who is chair of the LGA's safer communities board, said the unprecedented number of students risked creating tensions, even though they brought investment into areas.

National Union of Students vice-president for welfare Ama Uzowuru said: 'Poor planning for student accommodation in the 1990s did lead to a sudden influx of students into particular areas. However, forcing students into ghettos is unlikely to resolve this problem.'
