Local authorities could save more than £8m a year by joining a carbon management programme, a government-funded body has claimed.

The Carbon Trust, set up by the government to help meet climate change obligations, launched the fourth phase of its local authorities' carbon management programme on May 11.

The new programme brings the number of councils working with the trust to 98, 20% of UK local authorities. The trust says that 63 councils have identified savings of £20.5m and 300,000 tonnes of carbon.

The trust's programme director, Richard Rugg, said: '[The] programme is designed to equip councils with the tools they need to save money on energy.'
