The annual anti-flu campaign in England, launched this week by chief medical officer Liam Donaldson, aims to reach 500,000 more over-65s than last winter.

Donaldson also asked GPs to encourage vaccination in younger patients with chronic diseases such as asthma.

'This is the best way to ensure incidence of flu and related complications are reduced,' he said. 'We are working to ensure that vulnerable people are protected.'

Advertisements featuring retired boxer Sir Henry Cooper, who is over 65, illustrated that even fit and healthy pensioners should be vaccinated, he added.
